چکیده
Population genetic research is a critical tool for the conservation and management of marine mammals other species. The bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) subject to aboriginal subsistence hunting in Alaska, Canada, Chukotka, Greenland managed by International Whaling Commission all those countries except Canada. Genetic studies support plans determination safe quotas providing information on levels diversity, estimates abundance effective population size, stock separation. Because populations are monitored several countries, including monitoring, there need methods that can be consistently used multiple labs provide comparable data publicly shared built upon successive studies. Here we present new panel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), derived from populations, meet criteria. We describe use Fluidigm SNPtype assay analyzing 69 autosomal, 6 X-chromosome, 1 Y-chromosome SNPs. Results indicate herein reliable have low error rates. SNPs discrete sequence-based markers, loci described here replicated, different labs, directly comparable, making more useful than existing microsatellite markers.

Serum chemistry of bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus).
Sera of 19 male and female bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) collected near Barrow, Alaska (USA) between 30 August and 13 October 1992 were evaluated for 18 serum chemistry values. Male bowhead whales had significantly greater creatinine and sodium concentrations, and significantly lower glucose concentrations than females. Pregnant females had greater triglyceride levels than non-pregnant fe...
متن کاملCharacterization of 25 microsatellite loci in bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus).
Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) experienced a severe demographic population bottleneck caused by commercial whaling that ceased in 1914. Aboriginal subsistence whale harvests have continued and are managed by the International Whaling Commission. In an effort to provide management advice for bowhead whales, 25 microsatellite loci were isolated from genomic DNA libraries. This panel of marke...
متن کاملCanada’s Most Northerly Postglacial Bowhead Whales (Balaena mysticetus): Holocene Sea-Ice Conditions and Polynya Development
Rare remains of postglacial bowhead whales occur in the Norwegian Bay–Eureka Sound region. These are the northernmost remains known from the Canadian Arctic. The region is beyond the bowhead’s current range because of persistent summer sea ice. We argue that the region has been beyond the bowhead’s range for most of postglacial time for the same reason. With one exception, the 16 known subfossi...

Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas experienced a severe reduction as a result of commercial whaling in the 19th century. since the cessation of commercial whaling, the population has recovered to a size that is approaching pre-whaling estimates. inupiat and yupik communities in northern and western Alaska hunt these Western Arctic (WA) bowheads along t...
متن کاملSerum thyroid hormone concentrations and thyroid histomorphology as biomarkers in bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus)
Serum thyroid hormone (TH) concentrations have been used alone or with other measurements to assess health status or effects of toxicant exposure in marine mammals. Histological sections from thyroid glands of the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus L., 1758) were examined in conjunction with serological TH analyses. Serum was assayed for total and free triiodothyronine and total and free thyroxi...
